How To Create A Brand For Your Band

Online presence is of high importance to any business, and it is no different for bands. If you are taking your band seriously, you would be treating it like a business; you would probably be wanting to get to that next level of online presence.

Having a consistent brand across all channels of social media, and your website, will not only look professional, but it will also let your clients know that you mean business and take things seriously.

CREATING A BRAND

Think of the core of your band; your genre, appearance and stage presence. Now think about the types of people you play for, or would like to play for (your audience). What would they like to see? What would they expect to see from a band like yours?

GENRE

Look at other artists who play in the same genre, maybe the bands that you look up to or have been inspired by. Visit their websites and social media pages to get an idea of how they position themselves; and what content they share, the style of pictures they upload and so on.

Use a couple of sites to get an idea how you are going to position yourself.

It may seem obvious to some; but for example, if you are a country band, you wouldn’t be plastering your website or Facebook page with heavy metal colours (most of the time red and black) or with heavy metal themes.

Once again, you can get a good idea of how to promote your genre through competitor research.

Image is everything. People like to know what they’re getting.

APPEARANCE

This may be a sub-conscious thing to you, or you may be fully aware of your appearance; sort of “dressing for the occasion” so to speak.

Looking at the country music genre again – are you going to rock a flannel and jeans? Equipped with boots and a cowboy hat? Or perhaps if you are more country rock, you could get away with a t-shirt and jeans. Your fans wouldn’t be expecting to see you in a baggy Wu-Tang clan t-shirt.

Come up with a look and see how that goes for a couple of months, or the length you are planning to tour with the new album. Once you have new music or tour on the way, you can look at changing your image up a bit to keep your appearance fresh.

LOGOS & COLOURS

This goes into the marketing side of things, and relates mostly to your website and social media pages.

If you have a logo or certain brand colours, make sure that it is visible not only on your website, but on your social media accounts and even your email signature.

This is to maintain a consistent look and brand. Your clients will see this logo and make the connection that it is your band. Remember, clients could be looking at your website, Twitter feed and Instagram before contacting you, so if you have a consistent brand throughout your pages, you won’t go wrong.

PROFILE IMAGES

This travels into the social media marketing realm, but it is worth a mention and runs parallel with the Logo’s & Colours section.

To maintain a consistent brand online, attempt to have the profile images on all your profiles the same. From Facebook, Instagram or Twitter, if you have the same profile image, customers will know that the page they are looking at is you.

CONCLUSION

Your band or brand identity is all about what genre you play, and who your target audience is.

There are plenty of artists out there who are well established and have a great online presence by having a consistent look or ‘feel’ about their pages. This includes the logo, the way the present themselves, and the consistency of imagery and colours on their website and social media pages.

It’s important to create your band as a brand as it’s what all professional businesses do!
